An American Indian athlete, Jim Thorpe won every pentathalon event save the javelin in the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, only to later have his medals stripped for his involvement in professional baseball prior to the games, a violation of Olympic competition. Today, a memorial to Thorpe can be found in the town commemorating his life and athletic prowess.
